A couple weeks ago we went to Nebraska and the kids got to fly on an airplane for the first time (Maxon actually flew when he was 4 months old, but that doesn't really count). The reason for our travels wasn't a very happy one. Trent's grandpa Flynn had a stroke and died suddenly from a brain aneurysm. He was fairly healthy so it was all pretty unexpected. Although funerals are never fun, we haven't been out to Omaha in about 4 years so it was good to get out there and see Trent's family. His mom comes from a family of 7 sisters and I have only met 1 of them, so it was nice to meet all of them and get to see his grandma Flynn. We flew there on Tuesday night, and didn't get to our hotel until about 12:30 am. (please excuse all the crappy cell phone pictures, I forgot my camera)
The kids were super excited to fly on an airplane. The flight was only a couple hours so they did really well. And considering how late it was when we got there, they were surprisingly happy. They both insisted on pulling their own bags through the airport. It was pretty cute, and actually very helpful because we had our 2 bags, their 2 bags, a big stroller and 2 car seats. We eventually made it to our hotel and found a bed.
Wednesday morning we got up and got ready to head over to Trent's aunt Pam's for a brunch with all the family. After we visited for a while, everyone headed to the church for the funeral. The funeral was nice and it was made very clear how amazing of a man his grandpa was. I wish I had gotten to know him better. After the funeral we went back to Trent's grandma's for lunch. They have a cute little farm and the kids were super excited to see the chickens. There was one rooster who liked to chase you and Scout got chased a couple times. Kinda funny. After visiting for a while we went over to Trent's mom's to hang out before it was time to go to bed.
Thursday- Happy 5 year anniversary to my hubby! It just happened to be our anniversary while we were there. That morning we just hung out at the hotel in the morning while daddy did some work. Maxon had never met his cousin Alex, who is just a few months older than him, and they became good little buddies. For lunch we took the kids to a place like Incredible pizza where we had lunch and played games for a while.
After games, Maxon jumped in Alex's car and Trent and I took Scout to the mall to Build a Bear. We'd been promising her we would for a while so we decided since we had some time to kill we'd go then. Scout made a cute little panda bear and named her Sally. She loves her! Since it was our anniversary, Chad and Jessica offered to keep the kids that night so we could go out. So nice of them! We decided on Cheesecake Factory, and of course I ate way too much! After dinner it was back to the hotel to get ready for bed.
Friday we were off to the Henry Doorly zoo! This zoo is pretty amazing I have to say. It was a little windy and chilly when we first got there, but luckily once we got inside, the wind seemed to settle. The kids had a blast seeing all the animals.
After we were all exhausted, we left and found some frozen custard (Trent's choice of course). That night we went to Trent's dad's house for a BBQ. They live in a cute little farm house in the middle of nowhere and of course the kids loved feeding the donkey and horses. We visited while the kids played for a while. We eventually made our way back to the hotel.
Saturday- Chad and Jessica left early Saturday morning, and Maxon was so sad his little buddy Alex had to go. We picked up Trent's mom that afternoon and went downtown. We walked across the bridge over the Missouri river, linking Omaha and Council Bluffs.
That night we stayed at Trent's mom's house. We bought Tangled and watched it before bed that night.
Sunday morning we got everything packed up and were off to the airport for our trek back. It went pretty smooth and we made it home safe and sound that afternoon.
It was a fun trip and so nice to get to see and visit with Trent's family that we don't get to see very often. Hopefully it doesn't take us another 4 years to get out there for another visit!
