Daddy's busted up knee

About a month and a half ago, Trent was at the neighbors playing basketball, and I got the call.  I answered my phone, and heard "Sister DeGroot?"  I immediately said, "what did Trent do?"  It was one of the priests in the ward who was playing basketball with him, he said, "he hurt his knee really bad and can't move."  Awesome!  So I climbed in the car to go get him.  He really couldn't move.  The guys he was playing with knew it was bad so they carefully lifted him onto a folding table, using it as a stretcher, and hauled him out to a truck, where they slid the table into the bed of the truck, and hauled him to the ER.  Saved us a pretty penny by not having to call an ambulance!  Once we were at the hospital they did an x-ray and found the knee cap was not where it was supposed to be.

At first they thought it was just dislocated and they could just pop it back into place, but then later decided he'd torn the patellar tendon, the one attaching it to the tibia below the knee. :(  They sent him home with a brace and some meds and the # for an orthopedic surgeon.  We weren't able to see the surgeon for a couple days, but when we finally did he said he wanted an MRI before going in for surgery.  That took another couple days, then to get back in to see the surgeon again took another couple days, then surgery was finally scheduled for the next week!  So it took 2 weeks after he hurt it before he even got in for surgery.
Here he is right before surgery.  There was tons of bruising, behind his knee was completely black!

The first week and a half or so after surgery was super miserable.  He couldn't sleep well at all, his calf had horrible throbbing pain, and he was totally miserable.

This is 1 week post op.  Pretty gross.

We are now 5 weeks post op, and slowly he's able to do more and more.  He's still in a brace, and will be for a while.  He started physical therapy last week, and was finally able to bend his knee, a whopping 22 degrees!  At his appt this week he made it to 30.  It'll obviously be a slow recovery, but we're getting there.  Just 7 more weeks and maybe he can bend it enough to fit in a car!
